Well I've just sent off to my advisor my first draft of the first chapter of my thesis that I've written! I hope that he thinks it's okay, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

I did the easiest one first...the chapter on Analytical Techniques. I started with that one pretty much just to get used to the idea of writing and formatting and what not, and I think that it worked!

Next up...Chapter 3. Uranium Speciation in the Environment. If I can get that one done in two weeks, I'll be majorly on track!

Okay! Almost all the way done with my thesis summary... still have to hunt down a couple of diagrams and references but that shouldn't be too bad. I do still have to do something about the abstract and conclusion, which are in my mind, the most difficult parts! Maybe I can get away with putting them off.

The only other annoying thing is that *Heir Dr professor* is going to be out of town next week and so, won't have a chance to look over what I've done and tell me if it's a total load of crap and that is definately not what anyone wants to see (if it is...) before I fork it over to the real powers that be.

que sera I guess

I was planning on spending this week both working in the lab and working on my thesis for my trip to Boston next week, but as it turns out I can't collect my data on the AXIOM (MC-ICP-MS) because I don't know how to use it and convienetly, the guy that does, is on vacation for two weeks! ARG! But instead of me postponing this trip/thesis meeting yet again and working on nonsense for a week or so, I'm spending all of my time writing my thesis summary/prospectus and outline. Which although is a sub-optimal situation still seems to be working out well.

The Boston trip is planned, I'm going Tuesday-Saturday and will probably have a few meetings on Wed and Thur to discuss the progress of my thesis and the prospect of graduating in January... Hopefully this will all go well because I REALLY want to GRADUATE!!

So far, I have the outline finito (at least Draft 1) and am/will be working today and the rest of the weekend on the Summary/prospectus bit (for which I've done a bit of brainstorming and outlining, so I'm off to an okay start) which I can hopefully get finished by Monday so I can mail it off to the Powers that Be ahead of time for them to review before we meet.

I suppose this qualifies as punting though...so I had better hop to it...

Today's writing goal: At least 5 pages of *quality* Thesis Summary!!

So, I have my first draft finished for the most part and I already have corrections from my advisor. That means I need to finish the paper corrections tonight and then give my committee members copies tomorrow (I will ask it they want paper or burned CDs). The corrections/additions where I need to physically get new images and data I will just take care of after the committee has their copies so I can get them stuff to start reading before the real torture begins.

I still don't have an official date for my defense and it's VERY frustrating! I need to get it scheduled SOON to make the August deadlines! Keep your fingers crossed that I get it scheduled tomorrow. No more messing around here!

Okay, it’s been about an hour and I’m halfway done “brainstorming” through what I think should be the general outline for my thesis prospectus. I’m taking a break now and will finish the other half of this exercise later. One thing that I am noticing though, that I have found interesting, is how surprisingly easy this free-writing thing seems to be. Perhaps the hard part of the excersise will be putting it all together into a coherent and well thought out grammitacally correct body of work. But it is at least getting me used to writing and getting my thought out into electronic form.

I'm thinking about buying some books on the Thesis writing process...I figure that they'll help me organize my thoughts and give me some ideas on how to start writing.... does anyone have any recommendations?
30th-Jun-2006 03:58 pm - A little intro and my goals
Hi there, might as well introduce myself. I'm starting my second year, working on a master's thesis in anthropology. I have about six months to write it (plus a bit more time after that for revisions). Over the summer, I'm supposed to be reading a bunch and solidifying my topic, and the fall is for getting down to business and writing it. So there we go. My topic as it stands right now is largely a methodological critique/exercise and will most likely involve the analysis of some legal documents and newspaper articles. The big project right now is taking a bunch of old newspaper articles that my advisor collected ages ago and making PDFs of them for my own records.

My goal for the next week is to write up a current draft of my thesis proposal, get together a preliminary bibliography, finish PDFing a batch of newspaper articles, and write at least a paragraph (aside from the proposal) each day. Hopefully saying that here will be motivation for me to actually do it; I'll let you know how it goes.

Okay, so I didn't exactly work for 4 hours on the prospectus last week as I had promised myself... I guess that means 8 hrs this week! I'm hoping to chop it into little blocks of two, and maybe work some on the airplane. In the meantime, I've got to get a det chunk of this data analyzed before I leave on Friday if I'm going to go to Boston for the thesis meeting in Mid-July as planned.

Writing time: 4hrs/week (plus the hrs I missed last week)
goal: Thesis prospectus/introduction and detailed outline by July 4 (Independence day!)
outlook: good
Things done to accomplish goal: erm...right. I'm on it.
Days until Mar. 5: 259

OK, I mysteriously didn't receive a whole slew of emails dating back to maybe February and relating to a conference.

I submitted on an abstract of 500 words.

The conference is next weekend and I'm presenting.

I haven't written the paper because I didn't know I was presenting it.

Someone make me do some work!
